Log fires, sunny days, mushrooms, raki making , olive harvest and then the first oranges... there's much to love about winter in Crete.
Christmas is celebrated with a beautiful display of lights in Rethymno. At Epiphany (January 6th), there is the Orthodox festival of the Blessing of the Waters, when young men dive into the Venetian harbour to retrieve a cross. But without doubt the principal festival signalling the end of winter is Carnival! This can happen in either winter or early spring, depending on the Orthodox calendar.
